Changing Front Discs, pads and bearing query

Postby 81gR3d8us » Sun Aug 26, 2018 8:44 am

Hi Guys...I need to change the hub bearings, brake discs and pads on my March 1999 smiley banana engined camper. Do I need any special tools? Youtube don't seem to have a video and Haynes don't mention anything beyond the three spanner logo "difficult competent DIY mechanic" and I've got a lifetime's collection of tools including a largish wheel puller....anytjing I need to watch out for in particular? Any help / advice gratefully received.

Hardest part is getting the old discs off the hubs
The easiest way is to cut almost in half and split with a big chisel or similar.
They really are almost welded on and a pig to get off with rust etc.

I had to smash mine off bit by bit, with a club hammer  (good old fashioned engineering! )

As said, you need to get the disc off the hub, I live next door to a workshop that has a hydraulic press, problem solved.

First you need to remove the caliper and support bracket. The bolts are loctited.
Easiest way I found, having done a few is to use firm, sustained pressure on a breaker bar, first on the bottom bolt, 'cos it's easiest, leaving it loose to support the caliper, then crack the top bolt a few turns until it jams in the shocker then use a 1/4" drive socket to wriggle it out.
You may need to...persuade a 6 point socket onto the bolt. Hang the caliper on an 'ook whilst removing the hub and disc.
If you manage to knacker the top bolt, some do, swap it with the bottom bolt.

Works for me.

Big hammer to remove the disc from the hub.
It's knackered anyway so you can't hurt it.
Bash 12,6,9,3 o'clock and it'll come off.

Bearing race putting in also involes a hammer and specialist tools.

Can I just say a huge THANK YOU to the 6 members who replied to my initial post? On Friday / Saturday last I removed the hub / disc assemblies complete and used two lump hammers and a big vice to separate the old discs from the hubs. I had to hit them very hard many times as indicated on here. The o/s outer bearing cage was broken and almost welded onto the stub axle....it needed an angle grinder and a chisel to remove it...but afterwards the stub axle itself cleaned up well enough to take the new bearings and everything went back together as it should. So thank you for the advice....I might not have had the nerve to take on the job without.

Nice 1 8)
You have now passed stage 1 and 2 of the Mk3/4/5 transit training course.

Just remember don't overtighten the bearings initally.
Then check and adjust them in a week or so or a 100 miles which ever comes first.

Hi Guys,

tried finding a video about changing front discs, pads, bearing and couldnt.
At least not in english language. Is the center nut adjusting the bearing a regular thread or does it come of clockwise?

Regards,
Marc
