Mk3 axle into mk4?

Postby Gavin » Sat Sep 08, 2018 6:31 pm

Hi guys..... long time no see!

Finally got around to putting my mk3 lsd axle into my mk4.

Using mk4 brakes so i've swapped all that hardware over and welded the bracket for the LAV in the right place, as well as cutting the damper mounts off turning them around and welding them back in place.

Everything lines up lovely....except the wheels with the arches!

I've long since got rid of the mk4 casing but from memory it was only a couple of inches wider than the mk3 one... but now i've fitted it the wheel looks to be about six inches inside the arch, and the inner arch fouls the wheel by about an inch and a half!

Have i got something wrong or do i need to space the wheel out or tub the arches?

Ta.

maybe send a pm to pocketrocket on here, he put a mk3 axle on his mk5 tourneo, got 9 inch wellers on it, but I dunno if he had to chop and mod the inner arches
gotta be worth an ask :?:

the mk4/5 wheels have a different offset to the mk3 wheels so yes you need to space them out or fit the wider wheels

I was planning on getting the whewls banded to fill the arches, maybe they can reduce the inset as well. If not i'll be on the look out for some mk 3 wheels i guess.

Thanks luke, its good to be back. Too many projects and distractions, been spending all my spare money on bike trackdays over the past 4 years...starting to realise i need a deducated van i can sleep in, so git a renewed interest in finishing this.

Hello!
The rear axle MK3 is a couple of inches shorter than the rear axle MK4.
The width of the body on the wheel arches MK3 to 34 millimeters already MK4.
There is a difference in the emission of ET wheel disks MK3 and MK4.
Because this "Cheburashka" turned out. :(
I do not understand what made you change the rear axle MK4 on the rear axle MK3.
