Where/how to get the codes read or reset? Mk5 '98

Postby Riggard » Sun Sep 09, 2018 7:34 pm

When i start my transit mk5 '98, the engine light is on for a few seconds and then turns off. As i understand this means it has errorcodes stored. I would like to tackle this problem.

From what i've read there is only one option to read the codes, which is to put it to a lucas laser 2000 tool to the van. Is this correct or are there other ways to get the codes read?

And what about resetting the errorcodes, are there any options other than a the laser2000 to get this done? Unplugging the battery for a while?

I'm located in Holland, does anyone know a good garage or adress to get the van hooked up?

Do you have an Epic Turbo motor or just a Banana Di?

Did some investigations myself, and came up with something that seems to work :D Total cost? €7,50
Sounds like a good alternative to the laser2000.

What did I do?
A regular OBD cable does not work. So i googled, and found some information that suggests it's possible to modify an an ELM327 cable to make it work with older fords: https://topscantool.com/modify-mscan-el ... rscan.html
Turns out these cables are also sold ready-made on ebay, just search for 'Ford Modified ELM327' and bought this cable:https://www.ebay.nl/itm/ELM327-USB-OBD2 ... 2749.l2649 (Mods, if i'm not allowed to mention this, please remove)

Next step is getting software for the fault codes ForScan is what you need, and it's free: https://forscan.org/download.html

Last step is plugging it all into the transit & laptop & doing the reading. Obd port is in the fusebox in the cabin, behind the spare fuses.

In my case this returned 2 DTC's, both innocent and related to the throttle pedal. Made sense because i once disconnected the pedal. I erased the codes, started the engine again and then the light was no longer on. Happy camper.

Fancy making a standalone post and ask for it to be made in to a useful info one?

I will get the bits to verify it works as it should?

Sure! You mean that I create a new post in the "Mk 3, 4 & 5 - Second Generation Transits" section I assume?

Would be cool if you could verify (if i'm not mistaken you also have the laser2000 tool right?)
I only had 2 codes and they made sense because I once unplugged my throttle pedal when installing my Cruise control, but more data never hurts.

Hi riggard,

Also from NL here, with the same initial problem.

I have a ford nugget (transit) mk5 from 1996, and I try to read the ECU.
But without succes so far. That cable, is it still available somewhere?

I went to the ford dealer and they couldn’t get in either, so maybe a faulty plug or wires.
I have some stored errors and also I need to connect an extra key (PATS).

I have an OBD2 (Bluetooth) reader with the free software.

Any suggestions?
