Rear fog lamp on with main & dip beam

Postby sideshow_bill » Sun Sep 09, 2018 9:03 pm

Hi, I just noticed that my rear fog lamp works with both dip & main beam. I am sure it hasn't always been like this & I have not done any electrical work on it for years. (I have owned the van since 2005)
Everything seems to work as it should, Comes on with ignition & main/dip selected on the right stalk but does not go off when main is selected with the left.
Yellow indicator lamp indicates correctly when the lamps are on. Disconnecting main/dip selector at the plug makes no difference. Lamp is enabled as soon as ignition & right stalk is engaged.

I have looked through the diagrams in the Haynes manual but cant see where the power can be coming from in main beam mode..

Anyone shed any light on this issue?

Cheers

Bill

So its false memory syndrome, or just me loosing my marbles!
I have never used fog lamps & was just testing them pre-mot.
I checked the MOT manual & it seems to say they can work with main or dip so I will leave them alone.

Thanks Twin Wheel for your help :)

Hi, I think older transits the fog light only worked off dip beam.

That would be rather strange, it is the REAR fog light, one wouldn't like that one to cut out when switching on the main beam (regardless of the fact mains are not advisable in fog anyway) . For the FRONT fog lights it could make some sense.

It’s fairly common in more modern cars for the rear fog light only to work on dip beam but both my mk5 transits fog lights stay on on dip and main beam also unlike again more modern cars after you switch them on you must manually turn off again after you’ve turned the main lights off and back on there still on but most newer cars will automatically turn the rear fogs off (power hold relay or something)
