rear axel diff kit

Postby kennystag » Wed Sep 19, 2018 1:53 pm

Hi All,
I have fitted a rear axel diff kit on my 190 mk5 with 4.63 ratio, twin wheeler, anybody got any idea how good this will be for motorway driving to keep the revs down.
Cheers

What engine you have, and how is it doing with that ratio? I want to upgrade my 68ps to 4,64 but im afraid the loss of power might be too much. Tnx

Mine has a 5.14:1 standard diff as far as I know and at 3000rpm has a speed of 100km/h, it is a 7/2000 190 lwb mid roof with a 2.5td (100ps) and mt75 5 speed with single 15" six stud wheels. I bought a 4.63:1 complete diff but haven't had the opportunity to fit it as yet. Could mine have the 4.63:1 already?

Surely the answer to this would be to drive it down the motorway & find out :? :? :?

I have and as I said @3000rpm it does 100km/h and drivetheglobe has quoted the same but with a 4.63:1.
I guess the only way would be to remove the diff cover and check or hope someone may already have the knowledge to answer. ie, someone with another similar van with a 5.13 and 6 stud 15" wheels.

I would of guessed after 8 months he has already tried it for cruising on the motorway

I seem to remember a 4.63 diff is 2700 rpm maybe  not sure if that is at 100kph or at 60mph through.

You don’t need to remove the diff cover, you need to do a search on here it’s being explained may times, you need to count the number of times the prop shaft turns for every time the wheel makes a full turn, less than 5 and you have a 4.63 and a little more than 5 you have a 5.14  in saying that I think there is a small catch that if only a single wheel is being turned you will need to divide the number of turns by half (it’s something like that but a fairly simple process)

Did the search and although there were countless posts to go through I did find quite a wealth of information. If it stops raining I'll jack the van up and check that way just to be sure, but by the sounds of it I do have a 5.13 ratio fitted.

I have the same problem as you but now I am going to dismantle a Mk6 5 speed gearbox and put everything in a Mk5 . The mk6 has higher gear ratio.

Easiest way to determine the diff ratio is to look at the tag attached to one of the diff studs, front loading diff or to look at the vin plate, box ? factory ratio code is stamped in a box, can't remember........
Next way. Park on a flat surface with enough space to roll the van forwards or backwards. Tyre chalk a mark on one rear tyre and on the road next to the mark. Chalk a mark on the diff flange and the diff. Roll the van either way and count the number of times the prop mark passes the diff mark. Best done with an assistant. If less then 4 times you have a 3. xx ratio, if 4 plus a bit times you can work out the ratio by the amount the prop mark passes the diff mark. An inch or so you probably have a 4.1, about half a rev you probably have a 4.56 or similar. 5 and a bit times round you have a 5.xx ratio.
