Mk5 Inlet manifold elbow gasket alternative

Postby Fo-Banshee » Thu Oct 04, 2018 8:45 pm

Hi, I'm unable to purchase a gasket for the elbow as marked in the drawing, any suggestions for gasket sealant that someone might have used successfully. cheers John

I've used toolstation stixall for........
everything when a replacement gasket wasn't available and needed to be mobile ASAP.

100% sucess rate up to now.

You could try some of this stuff. I don't know what it is called but I bought it as exhaust manifold gasket material. This gasket was cut with a waterjet profile-cutter, but a good pair of shears and wad-punches work OK as well. Image

That will work without a doubt, but he's talking about the INLET manifold.

Common silicone sealer, stuff like Hylomar as well as cutting one out of a sheet of gasket paper will all work. I usually go for the Hylomar like stuff (which in itself is a kind of silicone sealer, though a natural one), it's the less fuss.
Combining the old gasket, if it's still in shape, with Hylomar even works better.

Like I said........
Stixall (poor mans tigerseal)
Used it on inlet manifolds, thermostat housings, rocker covers, diff housing plates, and exhaust joints (pre cat) on various vehicles.

It seems pretty much oil/water/heat resistant

Does it make a difference because the joint is under boost if I was to use silicon compared to the stixall? Ideally I'd like an original gasket but its not available anymore here in the British Penal colony. The gaskets are still available in the UK but I can't get the seller to send here.

I'm running stock boost, only new to these vans so still finding my legs
Is the Stixall removable? Is it still easy to split the joints if needed after using it if I had to remove the part for any reason?

I've just recently finished swapping my Lucas EPIC Injection Pump to a Denso and while I was under the bonnet I removed the EGR hardware. As posted earlier, I used exhaust manifold material on the Exhaust blanking plate, but used "Permatex Gasket Maker" on the inlet manifold. The inlet gasket shown on my earlier post was cut simultaneously as the blanking plate was being waterjet cut. I didn't realise you were here in Oz, so didn't suggest a product that may be unavailable in your home country. However, now I know you live in the lucky country, I can tell you that the pictured product is available from AutoPro and is intended for the job you are doing. Hope it all goes well. Image

Thanks, I had a look to see if they stocked the gasket but they don't appear to. The only one I found is this but they don't send outside the UK and so far I have been unable to find anyone prepared to do the 'leap-of-faith" and buy one for me and then send it. Cheers, the good old permatex, used often over the years and completely forgotten about.
I can get Stixall here (Ebay), pricey though.

It's about £6 a tube here.
Go for a decent Rtv silicone that's more readily available to you.
