Banana engine diesel pump replaced won’t start

Postby flateric » Wed Oct 10, 2018 8:11 am

Replaced leaking diesel pump on transit. Now it isn’t starting.
When I crack the injectors there’s only a dribble coming out.
I tried removing the solenoid but still the same.
Any ideas on getting fuel through without towing it? (It’s a Luton facing wrong way on my drive & I live on a culdesac that’s shocking for double parking)

Have you swapped the original PATS relay to the new pump?

You will only get a bit of a dribble of fuel at cranking, it's all it needs to run.

no pats i think, theres just a cable runs straight to terminal on back of pump. no switch box.

On the back of the original pump.
These parts are matched, and can't be swapped with the pump, you need to use the original.
The PATS light should be flashing a code 23 if the wrong module is fitted :?

That’s all that’s on the back, no control switch. Does that mean it’s bypassed or do I also need to change this?

A good, fully charged battery should spin the Di long enough to pull fuel thru', mine did anyway. Loosen all the injector pipes whilst doing this then tighten one at a time when fuel issues. Should be a decent spurt in the air, again, mine does. Use a little easystart to help turn the motor, sounds 'orrible but will work.
Q. Do you hear a click when you power up the stop valve? You said you took the valve out, was the plunger clean?
Try a live wire straight from the battery.
Q. Have you seen this pump running?
Q. Did you change the fuel filter? Did you fill it before refitting.

Not seen the pump running. Wasn’t aware they actually failed. Mine was leaking but running fine. It’s the selanoid on the side that I removed. I put one off my old pump on Just in case. I haven’t tried the back selanoid. Is that prone to sticking? I can swap that if needs be. Which selanoid should click?
Not changed filter.

The solenoid in your pic is the stop solenoid, it'll never run if you don't apply power to it. This should click when powered. Carefully take it out and clean the plunger and refit.
The one on the side is part of the cold start, guess you have an old pump.
Yes, old pumps do fail, suck it and see. (Not literally).
A tip. Do you see the "upload attachment" box, bottom left? Use it to upload pics direct from your PC, no faffing about with other sites.

Right. So I need to try that. Will get back to you when I’m home. The pic is of the old one, hence no wire to it. The new one has a wire to it. Is it 24mm cos my biggest spanner is 22mn so will need to pick one up. Will it click on ignition on or cranking only?

Got it to fire after swapping the stop selanoid. Smoking white. Fuel pump timing I’m guessing. How to rectify?

Pin it up to check the timing, you may have the belt fitted one tooth out

I did recheck timing yesterday when it wouldn’t fire. I’ll check again but does it need a tooth turn clockwise or anti-clockwise?
