Replacement turbo for 2.5tdi 4EB

Postby Fo-Banshee » Thu Oct 11, 2018 12:12 am

After fixing a leaking inlet I found quite a bit of oil in the intake pipe and I'm guessing its due to leaking seals on the turbo. I started looking at a new replacement and saw a few on ebay which are bloody cheap. Has any any tried one and how did it go? What have other owners done when going for a replacement. Cheers in advance.

Do you leave a trail of blue smoke? Is your oil level going down quickly? My turbo has oil in the intake, just ignore it, van goes well enough. You wanna see the intakes with EGR, oil everywhere.

Sounds fair enough, its not leaving trails of blue smoke and the oil is not dissapearing at any fast rate. cheers

I have the same, im in perth.
100 PS (74 kw) TDI 1999.
mine looses oil at an alarming rate, and the crankcase gets pressurised by the leaking turbo seals, but no blue smoke.
The oil is getting burnt because its not dripping.
My point is, just because there is no smoke, doesn't mean it aint causing you problems.
It would be wise to start looking now, because mine got worse at an exponential rate.
Im just driving around with 5 L of oil now.
i think the ebay ones would be fine, just replace them again when the seals die. Thats basically the main failure point.
The seals are basically like piston rings which only seal when there is sufficient vacuum (pulls seal in one direction) or boost (pushes seal in other direction) to seat the seal against either of the 2 seats either side of it.
So driving around gently is the quickest way to make these seals perish.
You gotta give it stick off the line, and let off early on the way to lights using the engine as an engine brake.

For the price of the ebay ones I've been tempted to try.
I'll keep an eye on the oil consumption because its not that bad at the moment but I'm going to buy one I think and when I get the time try it out.

I thought it was standard practise to get in to them off the line,

there is one thing ive just realised about my post which is wrong, engine braking, the throttle valve thing that does this is downstream of the turbo, so using the engine as a break probably does nothing to help it. just dont ever stop, go through all red lights is my best advice.

Good solid advice, can't argue with that. I have a bull bar.
