Timing belt

Can anyone point me in the right direction of the best quality di timing belt and tensioner kit? Do ford still do them? Thanks

Standard 25.4mm belt or turbo with 28mm belt?

The wider belt isn’t anything to do with turbo or non turbo, it’s age related approx late 1997 onwards is the 28mm belt.

Yeah I think 28mm was from July 1997, dunno why I put turbo, probably coz the only one I've had with 28mm belt was a turbo

Use 'gates' belts & tensioner on mine.

Buy off fleabay and risk getting a "fail soon chineesium copy"

I wouldnt use a Gates Transit belt for holding up my trousers,Dayco all the way

I tend to agree the last time I fitted one to my TD the belt seemed ok but the tensioner was made of the softest steel I’ve ever seen I had a hell of a job getting the belt tensioned because the little 6mm Allen key (from memory) just twisted the centre out of itself and I was using a good quality tight fitting Allen bit
Next time I 100% won’t be buying a gates kit.
I have no experience with Dayco but will keep them in mind next time around

That's an interesting comment, (because I trust your judgement), as I have a couple of Dayco belts in the garage, that I bought when I had the Mk5. I bought one of each size, because being a July '97 build, I wasn't sure which it had.

When I actually changed the belt, I ended up buying and using a genuine Ford kit because of being told (at the time) that Dayco were

cheap and nasty

That not being the case, I'll dig them out and sell them

I never use the modified tensioner as I consider the original far more robust Gates belts are a no no due to some breaking at less than 15 hundred miles When you look at the 1.8 d mk 3 Fiesta the belt broke just by looking at them till Ford changed their oe supplier that had a teflon coating on the teeth an guess who the supplier was Yes you have it in one Dayco I never had one break at less than 100k

Always used the modified auto tensioner, the earlier spring tension ones with a late Bosch pump 25k if lucky regardless of it being the later wider belt. The very early di had a different belt i think so 3 different ones ? ( no doubt i will be told if wrong )
100k on a 1.8 d belts good luck with that, just change the fan belt, idlers etc at 36k

Yes early DI's had a different belt (No 6138677) but I thought oldyellar had a later Transit so didn't mention it to avoid any confusion

- 1984 - 1992 belt with teeth 2,5 mm high, width 25,4 mm 6138677 (844F-6K288-AB)
- 1992 - 09/1997 belt with higher teeth 3,5 mm, the same width 25,4 mm 1135355 (1C1Q-6K288-BA)
- 09/1997 - 2000 belt with the same teeth height 3,5 mm, but wider 27,6 - 28,0 mm 1135354 (1C1Q-6K288-AA)
