mk4 gear not engaging and studdering?

Postby Transit-Rich » Thu Jan 17, 2019 12:40 pm

Hello,

Trying to get my mk4 (1994) back on the road and almost ready now (passed mot) but there is an issue.

1st gear is hard to engage (worse when engine cold?) and when I pull away engine 'judders'/wants to stall so I have to keep revs up. Does not do this in other gears.
Any thoughts? I'm going to remove and re-grease the gear selector following a post on here and will let you know if that helps.
Thanks

Do you by chance happen to drive an HGV? I found I used to just slip the clutch in at just over tickover and away the wagon went, try this with my loaded van and get the same as you, bit juddery. Give it a few more revs, seems to sort it. I think mine has oil on the clutch 'cos if I give it some agro it smooths out for a few days. May need a bit of clutch pedal release adjustment. Check oil level in box, also correct MT 75 gearbox oil, not EP89-90.

Either the clutch or the box is w-nked (5th gear weld splitting so its trying to select 2 gears)
