1997 Ford Transit Van

Postby Tania » Tue Jan 22, 2019 12:38 pm

Hi thankyou for accepting me to the Group, I am in NSW Australia , I have read alot of posts and replys here.
I own a 1997 Ford Transit Van 2.5 Diesel manual
Rego papers put the Model down as a TRANS96B
VIN WFOLXXBDVLVD05809
I bought the Van off an elderly man and it has sat in a shed for 5yrs she is a decked out camper , I bought the Van Knowing it had its problems being, Engine Managment light comes on and goes into Limp Mode, hence why it sat in shed for 5 years.

Drives great till , randomly Engine Light Comes On and she goes into Limp Mode ,
if i turn key off and start her again engine light goes off and drives great again
or i can be driving and engine light can randomly go off on its own too, either way randomly goes on and or off could be after 10ks or 20 or more ks.
Engine cuts out and stops if engine light ON if i come to stop lights or t intersection ,
if i turn key on and start engine to proceed to drive engine light goes off again. and drives great again.

When i turn key on and start engine any day i go out to start the van, engine light not on till i drive 10,20, 50ks again.

Codes shown when read by mechanic are

1. P1173 Rotor Calibration Fault

2. P1180 Fuel Delivery System Malfunction - Low

3. P0105 Manifold Absolute Pressure/BARO Circuit

4. P1190 Calibration Resistor Out Of Range

5. P1182 Fuel Shut Off Solenoid Circuit

6. P1184 Engine Oil Temperature Out Of Self Test Range

7. P1256 Pedal Correlation PDS1 and HPDS

8. P1257 Pedal Correlation PDS2 and HPDS

9. P0400 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow

10. P1172 Rotor Control Fault

11. P1109 IAT - B Sensor Intermittent

I live in the bush and i would love to get the Van going properly so i can take abit of time to go places for a change.

Like a say untill the engine light comes on randomly she drives great
any input would be appreciated
Also parts seem to be obsolite for this model any advise on any other year models that would be compatable for spare parts for my 1997 like whole pedal assembly units etc.

Thankyou for your time , i just want to be a camper under beautiful trees etc lol im starting to wonder if that will ever happen, i go out each day start the van up sit in her and dream of going places so here is Hopeing lol

Those codes wern't read with the correct reader. It also looks like someone disconnected the pump with the ignition on - leading to lots of spurious codes.

From your discription I would start by checking cambelt timing is correct (needs a new one after being sat for 5 years anyway)

Just looked on the diagnostic report with all the codes out of interest and says MaxiSys so id say that was the brand of reader used to get the codes. I will ring around tomorrow and try and find someone with a Lucas 2000 reader out of interest Thnakyou

Hey Tania, I may be able to help you out with a few bits. I have a 1996swb that I bought for parts located in the ACT. Also Brookvale spares in NSW have a few.
Transit VG 07/2000 4EB 2.5tdi Mid roof Lwb (camper), VG 1999 3.8ltr V6 LWB, VG 1997 3.8ltr V6 LWB and a Transit VG 09/1996 4EB 2.5tdi Low roof Swb (spare parts)

As said above, first job should be a new timing belt, fitted and timed up correctly. Don't worry about code reading until you've done that.

Also, does it turn off immediately on key-off, or does it run on for a couple of seconds :?:

it might be an idea to keep an eye out for a Bosch injection pump that way if the Lucas lump fails you can convert it to a fully mechanical pump and enjoy that reliability that everyone goes on about!
especially if you are out in a the bush a breakdown could be quite serious i would imagine.
the Bosch pump completely deletes all of the electronics and will only require one 12V feed! to run the engine

Yes engine does turn of when i turn key off.

Also if i was to convert to the Bosh Pump at some stage, do i keep the same pedal unit that is in the van or do i have to convert the whole pedal unit as well to Bosh or just the Pump?

once again i am feeling hope and i thankyou you all dearly for responding and helping

I have the van booked in tomorrow morning to be looked at for a Blue Slip and fingers crossed if the engine light does not come on who knows it may pass for registration at least than i can travel abit to get to the right people to do the right job on the van instead of limited options of mechanics, definetaly not everyone is willing to work on the van here.

Ill keep uou posted

Thanks again

Yes good thinking Tania, the pedal will need replacing with one that uses a cable, and did you see the post above offering parts from Fo-Banshee?

Re: 1997 Ford Transit Van Limp Mode

Postby Tania » Wed Dec 30, 2020 2:36 pm

Well its taken nearly 2 yrs but i have finally solved the Limp Mode Problem, i decided to buy some senser cleaner , started pulling plugs apart to spray cleaner on, took the cover off the big main plug with all the coloured wires pulled plug apart and Bingo 3 WIRES not taped or soldered and touching each other. soft soldered them wrapped them in tape put plug back together, put cover back on and never had a problem again since. So one very happy women. will put a pic up of the plug with the wires when i can. So thanks all for all your tips and advise
