Coolant leakage

Postby blizard » Sun Feb 10, 2019 11:28 am

We have a 2.5D campervan, and the engine is leaking coolant for a while now, the last trip back 5 L on 100km.. The engine is off 2000, not smoking at all, starts at first turn.
I suspected the waterpump, and replaced it last year together with the timing belt.
The pump was delivered without a gasket, so I used the old one.
But the leak was not gone. Coolant is running behind the plate towards the steeringpump, and when driving the rubbish splashes everywhere.
I pressed the cooling system, nothing to see. I hoped the problem was a rotten core plug, but they all look like new.
Now I bypassed the radiator with a scaffoldtube, so I had good sight of the front.
The leak is above the waterpump, so I disconnected the thermostat housing. The rubber seal was flattened, and the contact face rusty and dirty.
I cleaned the bunch and put a new seal in, hoping this was the problem. Not so

Now I suspect the plate seal (33 on picture), what is the procedure to get that front plate off and are there any watercanals behind that?
Do I need to drain the oil also?
Can I use silicone RTV to replace the current gasket?
I hope anyone had this problem, and could tell me how to solve it.

No 33 is an oil seal and not water  You need to pressurize the system.
On the sixth day God created a Sprinter on the seventh he gave it away and bought a TRANSIT

I did, pressure stayed high.
Or do I pressure it with a running engine?

Might be worth checking the metal coolant pipe that's just under the injection pump as they do corrode.

You can. though it's better to use the old one and mount it with silicone RTV on both sides. Some parts need a defined distance to function, and by leaving the gasket out you reduce this distance. As always, clean and degrease the mating surfaces.

Hi, blizard.
Several clarifying questions.
Is there no leakage when the engine is not running?
Where do leakage spray get to?
If the leak is higher than the pump, but there is no leakage at the junction of the head and the body of the thermostat, the leak may be from the heater hose or from the heater fitting in the cylinder head.
Several photos of the leak will help you find it.

Thanks for the reply's
@Keef: I suspected this one last year, and took it off, using RTV.
The most cooland is on the oppostie side of the block.
@hondekop: I read RTV and gaskets better not combine.
@ cherniy_chack :
Is there no leakage when the engine is not running? I pressed the system, and cannot find it. running stationary it is dripping, when I rev it is pooring towards the steering pump
Where do leakage spray get to? It does not spray, in runs behind the plate wich is a half cm higher than the block
If the leak is higher than the pump, but there is no leakage at the junction of the head and the body of the thermostat, the leak may be from the heater hose or from the heater fitting in the cylinder head. You mean the 180 degrees hose around the cylinderhead. This is the first you see if you look at it, and no leak to be seen..

My ultimate question is: has anyone had a simular leak, and did anyone remove that plate because of coolant?

At the moment my back hurts really bad, and I did not take any pics, will do the other day.

Where did you read that? It has been practiced numerous times.

There are several: https://www.google.com/search?ei=YiBkXJ ... WvWxJhszyM
But this the second step, I first want to know if it is sensable to get the plate off to stop the leakage. Someone must have done that already.

major undertaking removing the intermediate plate.
Make sure it is leaking from behind there before attempting it.

I was afraid of that.
I am not fond of this stuff, but if it can stop the leak, I ordered 2 of these: https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B004FP ... UTF8&psc=1

Hi, blizard.
Through the Internet it is difficult to look for a coolant leak.
I think that it is necessary to drain the coolant from the system, seal it, supply compressed air to the system under a pressure of not more than 1 bar and process the entire motor with soapy water and lather.
I think it is easier than removing the plate.

Thanks for the repies.
Started the engine a few times, and let it run hot, seems the leak is fading.
That is good news, the bad is I did not find the cause.
Will drain the system (need to be done anyway, no radiator) and will inspect the metal pipe again (Keef advise). Then airpress without water, soak the engine with soap
Could be this pipe leaks afterall, and pushes the cooland behind the plate in the direction of the steering pump.
