Rev counter shinanigans!

Postby andygee1138 » Sat Feb 16, 2019 12:14 am

Hey peeps.
Picked up a NOS Orion diesel rev counter the other week for £15 and tired it on my '89 2.5 DI camper today. (Have been obsessed with getting a tacho for ages). I have the Mitsi Alty with the little two pin socket on the side and connected it to the lower pin under the warning light pin. At first it didn't show anything, but once I revved it it jumped to life. Shows idle at approx 7-800 and climbs smoothly with revs. didnt max it out to see upper limit though...
Question is, why does it need some revs to get going?
At the moment I was just testing it wired directly to the battery and the pin on the alty.
Everytime I start the engine it didn't come to life until it got revs. Not the end of the world but annoying. Any ideas?

The alternators usually seem to need a rev to start charging so maybe its down to no signal output until revved?

Ooh, interesting, maybe it doesnt kick in till the alty light goes out? I'll try that! :)
Anyone know the top end rev limit on the 2.5DI?

The later .tacho equiped DIs had a suitable alternator that had a separate signal output. As above, yours is down to the common lazy exciter not switching in once fired up.

Depending on whether you have a Lucas/CAV or Bosch pump, the governor is set slightly differently - assuming someone hasn't been fiddling and adding shims. Lucas/CAV are 4300 ish, Bosch are just over the 4000.

Cheers Jim. Its a bosch and I have put 1.5 turns on the screw...
Have got the cheap £8 ebay tacho working but not calibrated yet. I have an arduino set up as an optical tacho so will use that to check the revs. :)
