Mk 5 Transit type?

Postby m25roundabout » Tue Jul 23, 2019 2:55 pm

Hi All, wonder if you can help me? I have a Ford Transit 2.5 mk 5 lwb 190 and I am considering converting engine to run on vegetable oil. The person helping me has asked what it says on my log book, D, TD or TCI. But it says none of these on my log book. Does anyone know where I can get this information from so I can relay it to vegetable oil man? Many thanks.

Put up a pic of the engine, and we'll tell you :)

Basically, only the Di with a Bosch pump, will be suitable for veg oil. The TD (Turbo) and TCi (turbo with intercooler) will likely have a Lucas EPIC pump which is best kept on original diesel.

Many thanks. Hoping this will work. If it doesn't I will try again later. I am hoping that is a Bosch pump too!

Yes, that's the 76ps "Banana" Di engine (Name is derived from the shape of the manifolds on top!) and yes, it's a Bosch pump :)

I wonder if you will receive this reply Altransit? And I wonder if you may have an answer to another question which has just popped up? Usually my transit, Clarence, has no problems going up hills but recently the temperature gauge seems to be creeping up. Climbing Dunkery Beacon in Somerset it definitely overheated. The pipe leading straight down from the coolant reservoir does not seem to have a flow of water in it, only air, yet the coolant reservoir is full. I am thinking some sort of airlock. Do you have any thoughts on the matter that you would mind passing on? Many thanks if so. (ps. I let engine cool down and made the extra 100 metres to the top of the hill!). Cheers.

Check that the smaller bypass pipe from top of stat housing to expansion bottle isn't blocked......last time I had this problem it was the bit on the bottle that hose connects to.......solid.....poked a terminal screwdriver through it and whoosh it was sorted......or poss rad needs a flush.....

With thanks to Altransit for above information. My next question to you guys please is, do you know what size the internal diameter measurement of the fuel hoses would be on this engine? Are they a constant size? The gentleman I am talking to about Veggie Oil conversion reckons they would probably be either 8 or 10mm. Thanks in advance.

Hi Folks, need to flush and refill my coolant system. Have bought new water pump and thermostat to fit at the same time. What is the best way to do this please? Flush with cleaner first? Then refill with which products please? Any tips on the best ratios/products for 1998 mk5 2.5di Transit. Many thanks, (from the rank amateur mechanic).

If you are doing the water pump and van has not had a timeing belt recently it maybe a good idea to do it at the same time
