engine mount selection

Postby jamie182 » Sun Oct 27, 2019 10:18 pm

It's almost time to put an engine back into my mk4 crewbus, I have the original cast steel engine mount set up with the mounts that sit at about 45 degrees to the engine. i also have a set of the alloy engine mounts from a later van but am missing the other parts ( 1 rubber mount and the brackets that fit onto the chassis legs ) i can get them easy enough. there's a mk5 in my local scrap yard.
but the question is.
is it worth swapping to the later vertical style engine mounts? any change in vibrations/ noise? (based on if both sets of mounts were brand new)
I do remember the engine in the mk4 moving around a bit but its been at least a year since it had an engine fitted so i can't remember to what extent,
I am planning on using the fan shroud and viscous fan that i got from a 1997 tourneo with my 100ps turbo diesel with Bosch IP swap.
i'm asking simply cause I don't want the engine moving around to the extent the fan rubs on the shroud.

just thought i would update this in case anyone wants to do the same thing.
the engine was moving around quite a lot definitely to much to use a fan shroud!
i swapped the mounts from the mk4 45 degree mounts to the mk5 90degree mounts the change is Night and day engine moves far less and i will be able to use the fan shroud.

Your better off using the non turbo fan/hub, a lot lighter and much more reliable

i need a new fan clutch its seized up and just spins at engine speed.
what is the difference between the viscous fans and clutchs? what makes the turbo ones unreliable?
the engine i am using is originally from an LDV minibus, i think it was a 1998 S reg. the fan bolts onto the front of the clutch from looking on parts diagrams there is one that bolts onto the back of the clutch.

the turbo ones used to break up and mostly take the rad out, from memory the one you describe is the non turbo, on Transits the turbo fan was black non was white ?

i'm guessing the turbo one that was originally fitted to my engine, did just that and some one already swapped it to the non turbo version,
is there more than one size of clutch?
this is the engine i am using, maybe someone can identify which replacement i need ?

The fan hub on that vid is the standard non-turbo one, takes the white fan with a full circle round it joining blade tips together.

The Turbo fan hub has lots of fins on front, takes the black plastic fan blades.
Turbos have fan cowls on the rad too,NA doesn't.
FYI,the water pump pulley is smaller too on a turbo, and therefore the fanbelt is shorter.

thanks, i never even considered water pump pulley would be different. i think i will just leave the fan shroud out then i guess cause if i have the wrong fan it wouldn't fit inside the shroud correctly anyway.
the van the shroud and rad came from was a 1997 tourneo GLX 85ps if i remember correctly, it also had the fan like mine with all the blade joined at the tips so i'm guessing this also had failed at some point and been swapped for the N/A type.

Or do what we did and dump the viscous fan and fit an electric van!

No difference as far as I can see :?
I’ve compared them side to side and they look the same, I know the 115 ps is different but both my 100 ps TD,s have the exact same radiators as the banana mk5 I broke a few years ago.

yes im using the turbo radiator. had to re-drill the left side hole into the lower crossmember to allow the mk5 rad to fit a mk4, the mk5 radiator is much larger and will be easier to get a replacement if i ever need one. i need a mk5 slam panel to complete the swap, if anyone has one spare send me a PM.
