Starter motor

Postby Storm9 » Tue Nov 19, 2019 11:53 am

Hello all, first time on this forum and looking for some advice regarding my 1996 mk 5 transit, and the question is, can I replace the starter motor from just under the bonnet or do I need to get underneath as I can't seem to see all the bolts from the top. TIA

have a look at this vid and you'll see the starter bolt holes when he pans to starter after about 20 seconds

Bottom bolt is easier from underneath imo... no need to jack the van up or anything like that. Other than that its all through the bonnet

Its even easier if you take the grille out and use a couple of extensions

Either way don't forget to put the battery negative on the relevant bolt........

Always used to disconnect the battery leads then remove top bolt from under the bonnet then get underneath remove wireing and then the remaining two bolts and for refitting new starter put two bottom bolts back in finger tight then back under bonnet put top bolt in and fully tighten then back underneath to finish it off that was with the old large starter on the mk3&4s never had to change a mk5 smaller one but they always look easier with been so small
