Keys and locks set

Postby Abcd123 » Tue Nov 19, 2019 2:10 pm

Hi is it possible to get a good quality (or genuine) lock set with the ignition barrel and fuel filler lock with 2 keys. I purchased one from eBay a few years ago however I could open the doors with any other transit keys so it wasn’t very secure.

You can LOCK any tibbe lock with ANY Tibbe key, so it may be that you've fitted the locks on the wrong doors :?: :?

Hi that is what has probably happened. I did not fit that kit myself and got somebody else too. I will purchase a new set and try to fit it myself. I could do the ignition barrel myself but are the door locks easy enough?

You can check it yourself, if you can unlock the door with a random key, but not lock it with the same key, the lock is back to front (or side to side!)

Front door locks are fairly straighforward, if you have the correct key to rotate the lock when removing and fitting :)

I thought they were pretty fool proof when fitting, colour coded and different angles :? relating to which door

You would think so, but my Mk4 was like this when I bought it. It was ages before I noticed that I could unlock it with any Tibbe key, yet it was broken into by removing the small window

On this transit I have 2 different keys, one for the. Ignition, pass door, fuel filler and the other is just for the drivers door. It has always been like this since I’ve bought the van. However the drivers door lock doesn’t unlock easily and is hard to lock as well I’ve tried WD40 and still it’s not working properly. Is there anyway to get a matching locking barrel from ford for the drivers door (I think it would be the original) as it would save me changing all the locks and keep the set original.

You used to be able to buy lock kits where by you built the lock to your key number quite easy to do

I have a new genuine lock set for a van with central locking (or a chassis cab - just don't use the rear barrel), a couple of kits to build locks to suit the keys and a used but good ser of locks (but will have to check exactly whats there...)
