Wheel nut torque settings MK3

Postby Morst » Sat Dec 07, 2019 3:18 pm

Hello you guys 'n gals!

Just like the topic says I'm looking for the correct tightening torque for my six bolted twin wheeled 1986 MK3 with 14" rims. After some searching i found the specs for MK5 or MK6 here on the forum but what about MK3? Is it the same torque at both the front and rear wheels and does it matter if it is a twin wheel arrangement at the back, like my car, or single wheel layout?
I know, I know that I really should get a copy of a suitable Haynes/Clymer or other workshop/repair manual! Yes, I'm looking for one, I need one anyway, but I haven't found anything but whole new ones and they are annoyingly expensive, at least here in Sweden.

Best regards, Morst - Cheapskate.

Allegedly it's 183nm / 135ft/lbs for 6 stud but most of us just use a long breaker bar and tighten them until they creak, otherwise they are prone to come loose.

Hi Chuggy!

183 Nm - got it. Thanks a lot mate! Now I can remount my outer right back wheel with its brand new tire (puncture thanks to a screw in the tire and a whole lot of dry cracks) :)

Yeah, you're right. That part including an extension handle is just what I read in the other thread that I found while searching. Apperently, somebody else, the previous owner or more likely some tireguys used this kind of "torqueing" method on my wheel nuts. They were TIGHT, and pretty rusty too. I had to more or less do a dropkick (Murphys) on my extension handle to crack them loose! Now at least I know the correct torque, I'll try with 183 Nm at first, drive a bunch of kilometres and check if any nuts are trying to escape. If so - tighten 'til you bleed!

Thanks a lot!
