I think I was lucky!

Postby Chug » Mon Dec 09, 2019 9:40 pm

I was driving along a local dual carriageway and was just pulling back in after overtaking a couple of artic's when I lost power and had blue smoke coming from the exhaust, I immediately dipped the clutch and cut the ignition..... oh feck I thought :!:

I was quarter of a mile from a layby and just about managed to roll into it, I popped the bonnet and had a look, after a minute or so I realised the cam belt was a bit loose, so I phoned one of the lads to tow me back home.

After further investigation I found the cam belt tensioner had snapped and the belt had jumped a tooth on the injection pump, but other than that everything else seemed ok. :o
So I went and robbed another tensioner from one of my spare vans and fitted it and timed the engine back up, I turned it over a couple of times manually to check all was well, the pins dropped back in nicely so I hit the starter button and she fired right up, a lucky day when the transit gods were smiling on me I think :D

Ooh! The Transit gods certainly seemed to smile on you and your car, that's for sure! That could have ended a whole lot worse, I'm not sure but I assume that the 2,5 D/Di- engines are interference engines if that's the right term. They do NOT like snapped or too much skipped timing belts, pistons and valves may collide.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the rest of us! :)

yes it's usually bent pushrods or snapped rocker shaft/pedastals/rocker arms if cam belt goes
