Hi, trying to find the oil filler hole on my Mk5 gearbox and identify which oil should go in it.[img]

If I remember correctly, the filler/level plug is on the left (UK passenger) side of the gearbox, about half way up. You fill it slowly until the oil comes back out of the same hole, then replace the bolt/plug.

I always used MT75 oil in my box, but there may be a more modern equivalent now.

Top tip

Undo the filler plug BEFORE undoing the drain plug.

Use MT75 oil

Comma MVMTF is an alternative, and failing that use ATF.

Do not use a gear oil.

Thank you all very helpful. As it turns out the box was filled with oil perfectly.

The difficulty in getting into some gears was related probably to the synchro and not low oil as previously thought

Could you tell if it was thick gear oil or MT75?

If the oil is not the correct viscosity it makes it harder to get into gear.

1:1 Mixture of ATF DEXRON III and 75w90 gearbox oil works great for me (and others).
