Engine runs bad

Postby Ashgard » Tue Jan 21, 2020 3:15 pm

Hi,
As the subject implies, my engine is running badly. I can split it into three (seperate or related?) problems:

1. Stationairy it doesn't run flat/smooth. There's hickups causing revs dips and overshoots of about 250 rpm.

2. When driving (for example 50 km/u in the 4th gear, engine about running 2000rpm) and I need to stop for a traffic light, I brake + hit the clutch, then the revs drop below the stationairy setpoint (of about 750rpm) and the engine drops dead.

3. It doesn't always start directly. Normally when I start the car, I turn the key, the engine is starting and runs, so I can release the key from the starting position. If I turn off the engine and directly start again, the engine keeps starting but doesn't run. If I stop starting (turn the key back) and start again, the engine runs directly. I can keep doing this over and over again.

Anyone has an idea what may cause my problems? What can I try? Do you need additional information?

I've brought the car to the garage, but he too is not yet sure what the problem may be.

Also, I'm not native English, so perhaps my explanation might not always be so clear. If not, please ask me to clarify.

Thanks thinking along!

What year and mk my mk3 with Lucus pump had bad tick over when the rollers on the end of the thorrtle arms wear worn
My mk5 had the bad tick over when it needed the injector leak off mod doing non had bad starting .
And I had a mk4 that was sucking air into the system at the filler housing it would start ok cold but hot starting was difficult

What is the injector leak off mod? Never heard of it.

There was some false air in the system. As far as i know that is gone now. But if not, could that explain the starting problem? My starting problem is unrelated to cold or hot starting (i assume you mean a hot or cold motor with that?). My problem is alternating between working perfectly and not starting the engine. Without pauses, just starting over and over again.

The leak off mod is when it was new the return injector pipe came off number 4 so you have to take the return pipe off it and extend it so it will fit on the no1 injector leak off the little tit that is on number 1 that block off the fuel needs moving to number 4 and fitting on wear you removed the leak off pipe so that any air in the fuel leak off line will return to the tank from no1 instead of no4 .
As well as a some more leak off pipe you will probably need a new tit for the end of the line as when I did mine it split as it was old also be careful removing the pipe off the plastic nipples as it is easy to break them .

More questions.

When did it start running/starting badly and the recent filter,is it a genuine Ford or aftermarket one?
