Have you checked compression?

You may have a leak between cylinders. New head gasket would solve it.

You can re-ring without removing engine, drop sump after removing head. Obviously depends on state of bores. Put new shells in at same time

Hi all, so i managed to take the head of the engine betwen all the rain we have had. The head gasket looked fine, but egr was pretty dirty. valves looked like they we seating ok. valve stem seals looked worn but ok. Exhaust side of the head was quite clean but intake was very oily, they say that when inspecting cylinders you should see cross hatching mine look smooth. So before I go for a new engine as I have the full gasket set and timing belt ect do I put it back together or bite the bullet and just get a different engine.

Ideally you need a bore gauge for an accurate measurement. Re-ringing a Di used to be standard fare amongst owners( bearing in mind what cheapskates we are  )

HI all, Just a update. Rebuilt the head using the old valves but cleaned and reground valves, new valve stem seals. New water pump timing belt and new gaskets allround, I set valve cleareances when cold, the engine started ok after a bit. Should I run the engine till warm and then check clearances again, when listening to the engine no1 sounded a bit tight. Still smokey but I have aranged garage plates so Im going to take it for a good blast down the road to see if it clears.

Did you clean up the whole intake route from EGR to cylinder, as a clogged intake could also lead to overfueling and therefore grey smoke?

Hello Tmcd,

I have the same issue with grey smoke but only when climbing hill or in highway with 4th or 5th gear and suddenly accelerate. In this case i see grey smoke but in low speed I see black smoke. I have ssen oil consumption but there is a leak from generator. I want to know if you solve your problem and what you did it?
