Steering wheel removal

Postby Abcd123 » Thu Feb 20, 2020 4:08 pm

Hi I’m trying to remove the steering wheel (airbag one) on my van, I’ve got the airbag off, but don’t have a socket big enough for the big bolt in the wheel. Anyone know what size it is?

When you are going to the shop to buy the calipers you can get a 24mm socket aswell

Back in my "yoof", not having any sockets large enough, (or any money to buy them!) I used to use a hammer and a pin punch on the corner of one of the flats   :P

I'll just wait for the abuse from the pro's now

I can confirm it is a 22mm. Thanks to all those that replied. BUT as I took the bolt out, the wheel spring forward and a white coiled cable sort thing flung out. I’m not too sure what I’ve done lol. I’m also struggling to see where the yellow airbag wore disconnects. Can somebody have a look at what I’ve done and see if I’ve broken anything. Thanks

I’ve coiled the white wire back up and put it back together, but it seems I’ve broken a clip or 2. Would this affect the airbag in any way? Should I expect to see the airbag light when I put it into my other van?

as long as you haven't coiled it up to tightly shouldn't but the airbag light on. it needs to be able to turn a couple of turns either way, the clips that broke just hold the casing together. bit of tape around the outside will hold it together.

Disclamer! Feel free to discard anything i have said, as this is just what i would do if it were mine. its your safety, The correct thing to do is bin the whole unit and buy a new one from ford.
