You don't need to buy a "gasless" machine (they cost more) the only difference is that the polarity is reversed when using flux cored wire (ie the gun is negative and the job is positive)......take the cover off the machine and swap the wires round......(a gasless machine allows you to do this without removing cover).......as for wire quality all the major companies (sip, sealey ect) get their wire from the same place......it all originates from China on massive spools then it goes to Italy where it's wound onto the smaller spools and labled for whoever is selling it

I use a Clarke 130 turbo mig, works realy well just need to practise. on thin metal learn how to stitch weld, all info on utube. also I use sif mif mig wire 0.8 gasless, easier to use and less smoke. you can even let metal in if you take your time. the wire is abitdearer but its far better. gramps

Timelourd wrote:No such thing - MIG stands for "Metal Inert Gas" so you're talking about Flux Cored, which is only good if you can separate each piece from the workpiece. It's mostly useful for pipes and the like outside where wind makes gas impossible.

If you try to used Flux Cored under your van you'll get broadsided by a calvacade of red-hot cannonballs to the face, ear and body.

You'll also be trapped under there, breathing in the most vile smoke ever to come out of a welder.
Red hot balls in the sizzling in the ears and for that matter red hot balls in yer baws aint no laughing matter, go gas and just bĺock out any wind where your workng , remember patching requires continuous weld around the patch ,but replacing certain parts/panels can be spot welded

If you do go gas get a decent size bottle of gas, hobbyweld do them, I prefer argon/co2 as I find the weld is cleaner.
