2.5di(67ps) to 2.5Tdi(100ps) engine swap?

Postby vatza » Thu May 28, 2020 4:40 pm

Guys, I am new here, even though not new to cars at all. Recently I have purchased a Campervan model Karmann FT100, year 1988, MT 5 speed, with 2.5Di engine 67ps. And that is a really slow vehicle on the hills climb ...

Now to the question. I really want to swap the engine to 85ps or even better 100ps. Is there any article around on how to do this, needed parts and etc? If not, somebody willing to help here with info?

If that would be possible, it is only because apparently everything is possible... So - rather don't think about it.
The 85/100 and 115 HP models are electronically controlled injection systems (Lucas EPIC). Yours is fully mechanical.

You would have to reschedule the entire electrical installation from a donor. Whole. In the engine compartment and in the cabin. Including clocks. Also vacu system. Which in the case of the Mk3 / 1988 model is practically almost impossible.
It would be much easier to swap the engine for a gasoline engine with more power.

In diesel 2,5 by using the appropriate Bosch pump and injectors it is possible to obtain about 80 HP. But the engine must be in perfect condition with good compression. What pump do you have - whether Bosch or CAV Lucas?

picture of engine bay/pump.

Turning the Bosch pump up might change your mind about a full engine swap.

It's with Lucas pump. Engine is not in perfect condition, pump is also leaking from somewhere. Best bet I see is to make a complete swap. Even if it means taking a whole donor vehicle, as they are cheap. As it's being an old vehicle, I don't see a why would not we change also the wiring and dash inside if that's needed as well. But has someone done it, so at least I know what are the issues that are upfront?

Here I go again. In search for a new 85hp or 100hp engine, found some in the range of 250eur which is decent. And guess what, while searching, found a MK2 Transit fitted with e a BMW 2.5TDS engine  Will give him a call tomorrow, to check how much is the guy willing to take for that

BMW inline 6 sounds great in more than one way. When I look in this part off the forum it’s lots off threads conversing EPIC to Bosch . Lots off horsepower is not important when you travell with a camper . Keyword is torque . BMW 2.5TDS will get you both horsepower and torque. Go for it.

don't know about beemer 2,5TDS...as I'm surrounded with a bunch of BMW-fans i remmeber that those engines has had some problems...
I was pissed about Lucas EPIC leaking problems, and no one from Bosch-services around had interrest to do the Lucas-bosch swap, I founded that Ford SCORPIO engines can bee just bolt on!
As TD engine whit Bosch is more torqish I'll stick whit it for now.
