MK5 rear door snib

Postby oldhomer » Thu Jun 04, 2020 12:00 pm

My 1998 Autosleeper conversion rear door will open from the inside when the doors are unlocked. However when the door is locked it cannot be opened from the inside. I'm guessing that there should be a snib on the inside, but there is nothing there - am I missing something?

My 1990 back door works exactly the same.

Thanks for the replys.
Can't see any signs of a child lock - even though there was one on the side sliding door.
It just seems very odd that there is no way to open the door from the inside when it's locked.

I have central locking on mine and have the door card removed as doing some interior welding, looking at the door lock mechanism the snib as you call it, is integral to the locking mechanism and if you don't have it then you will need to change out the whole lock for one that does, either central locking or manual. Can understand why you would want to be able to open the door from inside when locked.

Not on a Transit, but on a Dodge camper I had I investigated the lock mechanism and found that I could drill a small hole for a small screwdriver to manually flick the lock mechanism, I ended up with a 4 inch nail that I kept jabbed into the rear top corner where it was easy to find.

I see on the door card that there is a hole, and behind that there the end of a linkage - but it just behaves in the same way as the door handle
Looks like something was there - maybe added by the conversion company?
Might have to dismantle to see how the lock works.

In the end I fitted a central locking actuator, which I can also access internally
