What is this wire.

Postby Sidney778 » Fri Jun 05, 2020 1:47 am

My mk5 has a thin black wire near the battery terminal hanging lose. It appears to come from the wiring loom.

I think it may have connect to the negative on the battery as I note mk5's have this similar black wire connected to the battery. What is it's perpose?

If its black im going to hazard a guess that its an earth for something...... dont know what though.

Is there anything electrical on the van that "acts up" or doesnt work?

There are 3 button below the right hand air vent next to the steering wheel which have never worked, but I also dont recall them working when I did attach this black wire to the battery.

I'm not aware of any other items not working.

Just for clarity is your black wire going into one of the terminals in that big multi plug or does the wire just go passed it?

Looking at my van for comparison, I have one black wire that comes beside the multiplug and connects to the battery and another black wire that goes into the multiplug. if your wire goes into the multiplug I dont know specifically what it does but the other broken end of the wire will probably be somewhere in the loom so just unravel the tape until you find it and join it back together.

If the black wire goes passed the multiplug, mine is just bolted to the negative battery terminal.

Either way its an earth for something, possibly many things, but those things could well be earthing themselves through other things as well.

n.b i am not an expert on anything, other than myself. :D

The cable did not go to the multi plug. If I recall correctly it went into a black sleeve with other wires right next to that multi plug.

I will attache it back to the batter. :)

Thank you.
