[Mk5 2.5D 1998] How to test a speedsensor ?

Postby Mpfeugrou » Thu Jun 11, 2020 4:56 pm

Hi !

I've seen there are a few topics mentioning the speed sensor located on the gearbox, so i thought i might find some help here ! :)

The speed needle doesn't move at all. It's quite recent and not related to something else i would have changed (clutch, gearbox...). It just happened : one day it was perfectly OK, as it had always been ; the other day it was dead.

So i found the speed sensor (same as here, upper image, on top : https://fordtransit.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=199187&p=1691077&hilit=speedo&c=1#p1691077) then took it off, didn't really know what to do, retaped the 3 wires as they seemed old, put it back. Obviously, nothing changed.
I got another sensor from an old Transit rusting in a field near some friends', and now my question is : how can i see if this one is working ?

It has 3 wires, so does it mean one of those is the ground one ?
If so, can i simply measure the voltage between the 2 others, while using a drill on the other side ?

Thanks a lot for your answer(s) !

One wire is earth, one is a voltage feed (should be 12V) and the other is a signal which will give variable voltage based on speed.
