Elm327 modified with adapter 1997 Transit fault codes

Postby Lenny2686 » Sat Jun 13, 2020 4:02 am

Hello ,

I am just doing some research for my old man who owns a 1997 Ford transit 2.5 litre diesel motor home, recently the vehicle had done a big end bearing and that's has been fixed( dad was mechanic) after doing the timing and running the vehicle he had noticed that the car was in some sort of limp mode just no power when accelerating.
Anyways i have read that you need a Lucas laser 2000 to read the fault codes in these vehicles, but because no one has one you can use a modified Elm327 with adapter with forscan to a laptop , (and yes the engine light is on.) I have found the information rather helpful on this forum but a little confusing as well, can anyone give me a definitive answer please if this is correct? or tell me what i need to get. In my own vehicle i can pull fault codes by running a sequence and counting the flashes is this something i can do also?

On a mk4 you can read fault codes as a blinkncode...

but that doesn't work with a mk5 (like yours)

I too have heard a modified ELM327 with Forscan works - but I have a laser 2000 so have never tried

Hi,

I can confirm that on my 1998 2.5 litre turbodiesel with epic pump, I can read and reset the fault codes using a modified ford cable and for scan. Its actually a route that a lot of people take on American forums, that made me give it a try as well. As far as I can tell it should work for all mk5 transits with the epic system.

What you need is a modified cable (can be had via eBay) and the free version of for scan (can be downloaded via their site). I described most of it here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=189151&c=1

If there's anything else unclear please let me know!

Thank you both for you prompt replies. Riggard that link to the cable has expired can you possibly post a new link on here to one?
I just have one more question do you need a cable to connect between the Elm327 and the car? Or does the cable coming from the Elm327 all you need? Like an adapter cable.?

It's a modified ELM327 cable. So USB on one end, OBD on the other end of the cable.
I think any ELM327 can be modified. The following topic describes the mods that seem to be needed: https://forscan.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4

I went the ebay route, as I couldn't find my ELM327 cable and couldn't be bothered soldering for couple of euro's. Link is dead, but mine looks like the following:https://www.ebay.nl/itm/ELM327-USB-OBD2 ... SwhbZd6Mco
