Ldv 2.5TDi Engine swap

Postby AndyAndy » Thu Jul 02, 2020 8:30 am

Hi

Been looking on the forum, but could do with quick answer ideally

I have a 2001 ldv welfare minibus with the 2.5 turbo diesel with epic pump

It cuts out after approx 1 mile, and then has to cooldown before restarting and same happens again

The vehicle can idle no problems

Am guessing it is either fuelpump or injectors

I have seen a 1999 lower milage same engine but with a manual pump on it, complete with gearbox and with warrenty

Apart from adapting the accelarator pedal, would this engine be a simple swap, or would immobiliser/electronics cause any probs

Need the van working within a week or 2, and am struggling to find good mechanics who can diagnose the problem, so thinking this may be the easiest / quickest way?

If this question has been asked before, sorry! Having to sort inbetween my breaks at work!!

Should go straight in...

But I doubt its pump/injectors causing your problem... more likely thermostat/radiator/water pump or even the temperature sender!

Thanks For quick answer!

Have mechanic coming over to check those things this evening,

It Had a replacement fuel tank fitted early in year, (last one had leak due to rust) the First mechanic did pretty bad job, not properly fastened up filter etc and left it bit of mess, it was running fine before, so thought maybe epic fuel pump may have got clogged up with rust or something (i had retightened filter, and checked all pipes) although the fuel guage still not work, but this shouldn’t cause an issue?

I’d be checking the tank breather  next time it does it try removing the tank cap and see if there’s a vacuum in the tank
Or remove the cap and drive it and see if it still does it.

a common problem with convoys is the little pipe on top of the tank, never know just thought i would that one in there. they corrode or perish can,t remember which one.

Had recovery out

It ran fine idling, and starts every time driven again, did around 400 meters before lacking power/misfire and can continue like this for another minute or 2 before gargling and cutting out

Noticed that one of the vacuum pipes was disconnected, (the brakes pedal also felt like it was pushed upwards just before it cuts out) this was reconnected (to air filter, not sure if this is correct)

We checked injectors and there was no diesel coming out when it in this state when the injectors were checked when cold there was diesel coming through) - this makes me think it is something to do with epic fuel pump

Burnt through starter, so not to happy and now can’t start or move

Clutch lever plate was also rattling, been told this could be the clutch springs

the whole engine has patchy service history,

Have seen a replacement, that I could use as an interim, but am still concerned re electrics and potential problems

I have sourced an accelerator cable and pedal from a transit, and these may need to be slightly modified

How complicated is the wiring, will a different engine have any effect on the immobilizer?

Finally, what effect will it have on the emissions, it has an aftermarket lez filter/exhaust, it has to tested yearly, and is normally has very clean results - they note the serial number of the exhaust at the test, and the van will need testing (within 14 days )and mot in nov

Here pic of current engine, and also one of the location of the vacuum pipe that had come disconnected (the top one at the back?)

That's a boost pipe, not a vacuum pipe.

That is a boost sensor, it won't stop it running or make it cut out - but will run slightly under powered.

Went to mechanics for engine swap

Turns out new engine has issue with fuel pump too - it is the lucas cav mechanical type, the mechanic installed the engine, had used the live wire from the old epic wiring loom pump to the solonoid on the fuel pump) he checked the lift pump, got fuel to the pump, but nothing coming through to the injectors, he checked the plunger on the pump too. He got the engine running by putting brake cleaner / easy start in the air filter but he is adamant it the fuel pump.

Seller of engine has agreed to either send replacement part or if i can find one, reimburse me for pump and fitment

But no idea what to look for - i want a bosch pump but they seem rare, so probably best to replace with lucas cav type pump, but get it checked / refurbished before installation?

Any thoughts?
