Postby Storm9 » Wed Sep 02, 2020 6:54 am

Hello, I have a 1996 mk5 and the handbrake light has stop coming on when handbrake is applied, but when I push down the rubber top on the cap at the back of the brake reservoir the light comes on, any ideas please.T.i.A

Pushing down on the brake resevoir top simulates low brake fluid and puts the light on, have you checked the wiring to the hanbrake switch at the back of the handbrake?

Mk5 doesn’t have a handbrake warning light.
(Transit didn’t get light till mk7)
Just the low fluid one as mentioned

Thank you both for your replies, the light used to work so I will check fluid level and switch. Thanks again

Low brake fluid warning light should work in position III of the ignition switch (starter). In this way, the function of the indicator light is checked.
Unfortunately, in this circuit, the switch on the sensor in the fluid reservoir is most often damaged, not the light. So: as a control, the light turns on as operational in position III of the ignition switch, but while driving, it may not work, even though there is no fluid.
Defeat.
The reliability of the system operation is checked, as described in the first post:

The light is not on when key is in position 111, but lights briefly as It turns over and then goes straight out.

That's ok, I should write "when we turn the ignition key to position III".
