Engine warning light/limp mode

Postby Lenthevan » Sun Sep 13, 2020 10:05 am

Hi all,
I'm new to the forum and very unfamiliar with the forum thingy.
I have a 1995 Mark5 fitted in a Pilot's Galaxy motorhome.
I'm currently stranded on the island of El Hierro in the Canaries.
I have an engine warning light (red) and the vehicle appears to have gone into limp mode.
The island is very hilly and the engine was very hot, although temp gauge was in the "Normal" range. The alarm did go briefly when a local mechanic realised the pressure from the radiator but returned when the engine was next started.
Any ideas???

Which version of the engine do you have, and what did the warning lamp look like?

Pictures might be handy?

The model is a 2.5 TD from 1995

The vehicle is at the mechanic as I type. He's scratching his head and has called in the help of an auto electrician.
Any tips to pass on would be gratefully received.

Yup so that's the engine management lamp.

Unless you can get a code reader (a Lucas Laser 2000) its going to have to be guesswork. Some people have had luck using a modified ELM327 connector with ForScan on a laptop. I can read codes if an ECU is sent to me, but if someone has been messing around - there are often lots of spurious codes stored.

The most common faults (from cheap to expensive) are:

The connector in the back of injection pump damaged (corroded or backed off pins)
ESOS plunger failure (it will run on for 10 seconds after the ignition is turned off)
Timing Belt has worn/stretched (If the injection pump timing is not synchronised within 2 degrees of the crank shaft timing it will limp)
The Timing/Pump Temp Sensor has failed - only 2nd hand parts are available.
The "Cam Ring" inside the injection pump has gone sticky - this is common when used with poor fuel. New injection pump required.

But there are others than can put it in to limp too.

It may also be worth inspecting the condition of the plug on the water temperature sensor and taking a resistance reading across the pins of the sensor

Re your last regarding water temperature sensor.
At his first look, the mechanic loosened the radiator cap and the alarm went. It also drove fine.
But the next time it was started the alarm returned.

Do you know what resistance should be seen?

google "Ecovippari EPIC" and there is an LDV manual with lots of diagnostic info - including resistances

It would appear that the local auto electrician had been searching in vain for the necessary information that is contained in the link you sent to me. I've passed the link on to him and even though it's not in English it will surely be invaluable.

Many thanks for your help.
