Yup so that's the engine management lamp.
Unless you can get a code reader (a Lucas Laser 2000) its going to have to be guesswork. Some people have had luck using a modified ELM327 connector with ForScan on a laptop. I can read codes if an ECU is sent to me, but if someone has been messing around - there are often lots of spurious codes stored.
The most common faults (from cheap to expensive) are:
The connector in the back of injection pump damaged (corroded or backed off pins)
ESOS plunger failure (it will run on for 10 seconds after the ignition is turned off)
Timing Belt has worn/stretched (If the injection pump timing is not synchronised within 2 degrees of the crank shaft timing it will limp)
The Timing/Pump Temp Sensor has failed - only 2nd hand parts are available.
The "Cam Ring" inside the injection pump has gone sticky - this is common when used with poor fuel. New injection pump required.
But there are others than can put it in to limp too.
