EGR and Engine Shut Off Solenoid

Postby BobNugget » Sat Nov 07, 2020 3:18 pm

Hi

My name is Bob and bought a Ford Transit Nugget from 1996 with a 2.5 DL engine to fix-up for me and my family for next years vacation.
I have some questions in relation to my Ford Transit Nugget which keeps going into emergency running after riding several meters.
The following errors are found with FORScan

P1402 EGR System fault
P1170 Engine Shut off Solenoid
P0401 EGR system insufficient flow detected (Plug restricted or stuck EGR valve or vent)

Question 1
I started out with the EGR valve error and took it off and cleaned it. I can confirm it works as it should mechanically (also confirmed by a FORD mechanic)
However, when I read live data from the EGRVPOS%, it always shows 26% when idle. It goes up when I Throttle with the gas pedal, but it never shows 0%. Where I assume this is the correct percentage when the EGR valve is closed.
Is there somebody who can confirm this has to be 0% when idle and the EGR valve is indeed still closed. If so, I am thinking about buying a new EGR valve to be sure it is no electronic error.

Question 2
When I turn off the engine it remains on and I have to put the key on the ignite stance before it shuts off. I am pretty sure this has to be the P1170 error. The previous owner had a new dieselpump installed a few years back, could that have anything to do with it? What could be wrong here?

Thanks in advance and I would be really happy if there would be any suggestions or hopefully even answers on this matter.

Have a good day!
With kind regards,
Bob

It will be the ESOS (engine switch off solenoid) that's causing the limp-home mode on the engine.
You can test the theory by stalling the engine at the exact moment that you turn it off, if it runs normally the next time you use it, then you at least know the cause.

Minormatt has a 'how-to' regarding replacement of the ESOS elsewhere on the forum, I'll see if I can find it for you, and link it here :)
