2000 tipper, engine issues.

Postby actionad » Sun Jan 10, 2021 6:06 pm

Hello. Here is the problem with my old W reg tipper. Cant bare to get rid of this van as it's the only one that starts and runs or did better than my other 08 transit.

1. Yesterday the revs went up very quickly and stayed up loads of smoke. Turned off at ignition. Didnt run away.

2. Tried a restart, idled for 5seconds and the revs went straight back up same smoke.

3. Checked oil level this morning and only about a quarter is left.

Any solutions or answers to this issue or issues would be greatly appreciated. The egr valve has had some issues along with lift pump leaking ever so slightly
Had pump reconditioned about 4years ago at 80thousand miles, dont get me wrong it does get loaded up with logs and woodchip every day but that's its job. I hope I've listed enough info for someone here to figure the issue

Fingers crossed it's something silly.

What engine is it? Turbo or N/A

Have you checked the throttle cable isn't frayed or stuck?

Might be one of the small bolts that hold the rocker shaft down?
They are prone to working loose and when they come out, the oil runs into the cylinder feeding the engine.

This ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Used to be a very common problem, it will be swimming in oil under the rocker cover, and you'll need to have a rummage around to find the bolt and screw it back in :)

thanks for the replies, the engine is N/A and throttle cable is in good working order, if the rocker bolt has come adrift will it have caused any potential damage I should look out for?

I've never heard of it causing any damage, so unless it ran out of oil, all should be well 8)

If its not the rocker bolt, then check the injectors - one could have a split tip causing it to overfuel

But I think its probably a loose bolt

on another note, if the engine is stuffed. Is there a plausible engine swap/upgrade that is worth doing? As the body work on my smiley is pretty much perfect and it feels criminal to get rid of my best truck so far.

imo the best engine swap is a 2.5 turbo diesel. normally pick one up for between £300-£400 quite often you can get one with all the necessary parts to do the swap. its a factory engine so everything just bolts in with no messing around. the difference it makes is unbelievable. changing down 2 gears to get up a hill is a thing of the past!

Thanks for the reply regarding the 2.5turbo swap, which I'm very tempted to do, but where do I find one of these engines?
Have done a few searches but abit wary of just ordering an engine of some firm.
Any useful honest folks that sell recon engines would be very handy?

If your current engine turns out to be ok (which is quite likely) you can convert it to turbo easily if you source the relevant parts

Thought I'd post an update.
Sent it to garage they said nothing was wrong and most likely was over filled with oil.
I mentioned about rocker bolt coming loose or out and was quickly dismissed! They took for a 20mile drive, then I used for a small journey all fine. So I though yes back to work, and bang same thing happened. Stalled it and towed it back to the curb of shame.
Rang the garage and got a response of new engine mate, but you dont wanna pay for that rubbish. Basically garage had enough of me bringing in my van, shame really.

I've taken the rocker cover myself and hey presto theres a little bolt that's come out of the rocker pedestal.
Not one of the bolts that hold the rocker assembly down M8 and M10.
Is this the culprit?
Have attached a picture I hope it comes out well enough

Yes that is almost certainly your problem :D
Although maybe It isn't that bolt because that would mean the bigots at the garage didn't know what they were talking about and they are the professionals that charge good money for their wealth of knowledge and experience right?

They charged me 60quid including the oil top up and a basic once over.

I put new 4 new bolts in today, checked valve clearances cleaned manifold etc. Seems to run ok, idles well and revs pick up nicely. Will take it for a road test in the morning.

I cant thank you lot enough for pointing out this fairly simple fix, I've emailed the picture to the garage.

Fingers crossed the old van wont do it again.
Again thanks for your help chaps.
