Someone put gasoline in my diesel mk5 now over-accelerates

Postby mkgld » Wed Feb 10, 2021 3:32 pm

Hi, for the first time (and probably last time) I have lent my van to a "friend" for one day and he put gasoline instead of diesel :x ... and not just that, he used the van for a kilometer and when the van started to fail he filled the tank with diesel without removing the gasoline.
After this incident, I removed all the gasoline+diesel mix that I could from the tank and filled it up with diesel and I used a injector cleaner recommended by a local mechanic, but I am having some issues, it is doing a lot of white smoke... a lot.. a huge white cloud, and also, it already happened three times that going downhill the engine starts to get over accelerated, even when I am not pushing the pedal, and the only way to stop it is changing to reverse and stall the engine, It is quite scary, feels like it is going to get burn. Last time my girlfriend almost jump out of the van.

So.. I am trying to figure out how to procced.
Does anyone knows why my transit is having this over accelerations and white smoke?

the injectors are three years old and the injection pump has been refurbished 4 years ago.

Thanks!!!!

Turbo engine with a Lucas EPIC pump?

Or N/A with a Bosch pump?

A small amount of petrol in the diesel is ok, whatever the pump.

I can't think what would cause the problems you describe - but petrol lacks the lubrication of diesel, so the first thing I would do is take the fuel filter off, drain whats in there, put a splash of mineral 2 stroke oil in and top it off with diesel and start it up. I would also put about a litre of it in the fuel tank. This will push some super lubricating diesel through the system and hopefully free off anything that's a bit sticky.

The purpose of my question was that a Bosch pump would be far more forgiving than the more fragile Lucas :)

My good lady filled my old N/A smiley up with half a tank of petrol, and then took her dad up to Luton Airport on the motorway. Realising what she had done, after complaining about the rattly noise that the van was making, her dad, (an ex-mechanic) said it would be fine if she just topped up with diesel when she got home, which she did without telling me!
Long story short, the van survived to do many more miles before I sold it, and it's allegedly still going strong.

Before you go at it like a Jack Russell burying a bone remomove the valve cover and check fo a loose bolt, classic symptoms and nothing to do with the fuel system

Back when we had a VW LT 35 V reg service van in the handbook it recommended 10% petrol to stop diesel waxing that was before the anti waxing additives for diesel was available.

Not Transit, but eons ago I lent my Consul 375 lowline to a mate for the weekend when his car broke down on the day he was due to go away, long story short he stopped on the journey for fuel and checked the oil, thought it was low and filled it up to the oil filler, mullered the engine but fair doo's to him he paid for all repairs and my out of pocket expenses.

I just realised that I made a huge mistake in the title of this post.. it is a mk3..not mk5.
Long time not posting here and I got confused with the number. Please admin, change it if you read this.
So it is a mk3 2500 di 1999

It is a Bosh pump.

I will try that!

Do you mean that the over-acceleration and white smoke could come from there? I did the valves a few years ago, maybe something got loose.

Thanks for the answers! you are all legends!

Woww you nailed it!!
I removed the valve cover and there was a missing bolt and one bolt almost falling, totally loose.

The funny thing is that I found pictures from the last time that I did the valve clearance and that bolt was already missing by then (4 years ago).

I have no idea how a missing bolt could cause this issues, my knowledge don't go that far.

Now I have to find a new bolt and hopefully that will solve the over-acceleration issue.
Thank you so much! you are a proper transit guru.
