mk5 steering clunks.

Postby sam noscoe » Wed Feb 24, 2021 8:44 am

hi all, recently purchased a mk5 county tipper, brilliant bit of kit. just getting to know it!
so the steering column makes a clunk/ wobble at the start of steering if stationary.
it looks like there is a small ammount of play in the mounts of the powerd steering rack. but would that cause excessive movement on the column.
i can feel the column play in my feet at the pedals!
i have had a look up there and there was quite alot of grease up there. does this sound familiar to anyone?
cheers, Sam.

Counties have a standard steering column from the steering wheel, to the UJ, but then a custom linkage AFAIK.

Doesn't sound common to me at all

Firstly, need to inspect all mounts whilst someone rocks the steering wheel.
Any play in joints and rods should be visible too.
Should also see if any joint not moving as it should

If you can feel it through the column and floor then it should be quite obvious when you look closely, as said get someone to rock the steering wheel and if nothing is obvious then get a lever bar and try levering to see if anything moves.
