as far as I am aware though the same pins are used on early and late senders

Mine and gcms are bot 99 Matt, and dont ask me how I know how there are 2 senders  Spent a while figuring that out. Dave heading to see fat lady in the PO just now.

Yes there are definitely 2 senders, if you get the wrong one it either doesn't work or reads the wrong way round. The change co-incides with the change to electronic speedo, and a low fuel warning light being added to the dash.

Still uses the same pins on the sender though...

To be honest I thought I'd been back on to say thanks for the advice, help and bits you guys so graciously furnished me with.

Gauge is indeed up and running once again, so painc over looking like Ned and having to do the walk of shame is a distant memory.

I can post it back with the other end soldered on if you want.
Can't understand why it didn't work.
Although I never took the section of harness off to solder it.
Possibly had a bad connection behind the heat shield.
Think I got side tracked at the time due to finding holes and then more holes in the chassis which due to welding fumes gave me the impression that I had been back on thanking you all for the help.

Anyway love and kisses.
