Mk5 fuel tank sender.

Postby gotgcoalman » Wed Feb 24, 2021 8:30 pm

So,because I'm a total Idiot the wire from the tank to the gauge hadn't been secured properly.

Today after negotiating several very deep puddles the wire must have become stressed enough to become disconnected from the tank sender and due to doing 100+ miles today with the connection bouncing on the floor as I went,I'm left with just wires.

Which pins do I need to reconnect the wires to? 2 wires and 6 pins
Yes I'm a dick

The vehicle in question is 1999 vintage.

Same year as the futuristic space program from years ago.
They lied and we don't all live on the moon and have intergalactic space buggies.

I tied the dangling wire up but can check colours in the morning.

Haynes is a bit of a joke regarding wiring on this van.
In the meantime I'd best fill it up and not play the walk of shame game.

Its quite fun Ned. The tank shows full, but its not

I shall fill it tomorrow to save doing the walk of ned

Can't post any pics as tappypoop insists I upload too much.

When I had the tank out I remember the sloppy fitting connector going to about 6pins?

5 pins....

I have a DOHC sender/pump in the back of my car - so should be able to tell you when I look at it later today.

Good news is that its just a resistor so it doesn't matter which way around you connect the wires

Thinking about it... if you fill it up, it should be the 2 pins that have a low resistance between them

I just looked on my mk4 and looking in from the passenger side it has a blue wire going to the left and a brown wire to the middle.

The plot thickens.
Stripped the very heavily insulated wire back and its 2 core. Red/white and black.

Managed to get in to a position where I could see the terminal on top of the tank and it has 6 male type connections for a square/rectangular plug to fit on.

Vroom vroom.

Filled it right up so I don't have to do the "walk of Ned)

Have you no licked that wire yet  does the 6th wire taste like purple.

Is it done yet, should leave it and play fuel gauge roulette, it’s such fun.

I'll try to get a pic without dropping the tank when I get in and post it using the computer as I've reached my tappytalk limit
It was brimful this morning.
The man in the garage was annoyed as I slopped on his forecourt

I'm assuming its 2 rows of 3. The row hardest to see may only have 2 pins though.

Definatly only the 2 wires for it though.

I shall touch them on my tongue (like you do with a 9v battery) just for you Ned
