Mk3 diesel

Postby Judith1963 » Tue Mar 23, 2021 9:10 pm

Hi,I’ve just purchased a mk3 diesel van. It’s been stood a couple of years.Ive tried starting it but doesn’t fire. There’s diesel to the filter but when priming it,it doesn’t seem to come through the bleed nut on the top of the injector pump. I’ve been told to take the plunger out of the solenoid, but still doesn’t seem to come through.Any ideas anyone.

Have you tried cracking the injection pipes and spinning it over and see if it’s pumping fuel out .

First you need to know which high pressure fuel pump is installed on your engine.
It could be Lucas CAB or Bosch.
If there is a Bosch, then a low pressure fuel pump is installed under the exhaust manifold.
If there is no Lucas booster pump.
Further steps depend on the type of high pressure pump.

On the earlier models neither had the lift pump under the exhaust manifold, later versions had it fitted for both types of fuel pump.

i would pre fill the diesel filter & if its a Bosch pump take the inlet pipe off and pre fill that by turning the engine over, Have you checked the timing belt ?

If the car has been parked for a long time, then there are hardly any problems with installing the belt, but it is better to check.
Belt teeth may be sheared.
If the belt is intact and the shafts can be installed on the locking pins, then attention should be paid to possible problems in the fuel system.
First you need to fill at least half the fuel tank. The Bosch pump does not like an empty tank.
Then install a working and fully charged battery.
Loosen the nuts on the high pressure pipes on the injectors and the "banjo" bolt on the fuel return line, which drains excess fuel into the tank.
Crank the engine with the starter until the fuel flows out of the return line in a jet without air.
Tighten the banjo bolt and turn the engine with a starter until fountains of fuel begin to beat from under the nuts on the injectors.
Tighten the nuts on the injectors and continue scrolling with the starter until the engine starts.

As V184 says if it doesn’t pump fuel out when injection pipes undone check the timing belt to see if pump is turning.

check the lift pump - back lower right hand side of engine - pull of pipe check its pumping, we currently have sim problem however fuel gets to our solenoid ours is a pump problem - yours sounds like the lift pump below. our mk3 transit we bought had been sat for a few years ( maybe 10 years lol), we've needed to recon pump and new injectors.ebay for injectors and a good local diesel specialist can help roughly £850 for lucas cav pump recon and 4 injectors
