Have a look at somewhere like Halfords there maybe a inbetween size .
to get it out without you may be able to use a small pair of stillsons or try knocking it round with a chisel as a last resort knock a bolt in to it and weld it to the plug the heat of welding helps as well .
if you damaged it getting it you can get a new one from grahams plumbers merchants or similarities the past I’ve used one with a external square.

thanks for your reply.

to be honest, a lot has to do with the akward height as well, the van is just sitting on the road.

should be alot better if it was on a lift

In similar situation I've used 3/8 drive with a bit of flat bar pushed in next to it to pack the gap

Thanks Chug, im sure I find a way.. Its just to determine what Shape that actually is.. I think somebody tried before, many moons ago :-)

In worst case, there is always the blue spanner..

It can't be tight, if its liquid

I've never known axle or g/box plugs to be that tight

That plug is like welded on. I had managed to put a lever in there, and the lever started bending, and that plug did not even think of moving. The material inside the plug started to give though. It's mad..

I think I will try and get a welder, and see if I can weld like a 1/2 extension on, and then get the famous Brutus Bar out.

Hi,

How did you get on in the end with that rear diff as think I'm going to try and replace or top up oil on mine as there's a bit of a rumble, but thinking I'm going to have a similar problem.
Cheers for your time.

Sorry for not replying to the last question. I have only seen this now.

How did I get on with this problem?

I just drilled trough the plug :-)

After all the flushing out and refilling with new oil, I just fitted a plastic blind plug in a fitting size that sits in the newly drilled opening, has not fallen out since.
