Mk5 diff leaking

Postby Mac1984 » Mon Mar 29, 2021 9:03 pm

Hi everyone, I did a Job on the spare wheel carrier today and noticed the rear diff leaking. I don't think it has a fill port, at least I did not see one now, might take a close look tomorrow, but it might need topped up as well as resealed

Any pros here that have advice with regards to this? How they are sealed originally etc? I can look tomorrow for whatever type of axle that is.

Thanks already to the transit community for any advice.

The filler plug is on the other side of the diff in the pic, left hand side as you look at the pic

If the driver pinion side of the axle is dry looking at the photo the axle case maybe have rotted through

Thanks for all the comments so far. I will take a closer look tomorrow, maybe clean it carefully and see if I can reseal it..

There is no puddle or anything, so I don't think it's dripping a lot, but I will give it some attention now.

Might as welllook into changing the oil while I am it, don't think that has ever been changed.

There’s no drain plug you either have to suck it out or remove the diff unit out of the axle if you have a leak on the diff gasket to fit a new gasket you give it a change at the same time.

Thank you for your reply. Just to confirm, is the diff not removed from the front of the axle?

In other words, is what I am looking at on this picture, in the rear of the axle, some kind of a lid, that can be removed and re-sealed, or is it not designed to be taken off?

I don't want to poke around there, if I don't know what at.

Thanks to you all for your help

The diff comes out the front after removing the half shafts propshaft and the ring of nuts holding it on the rear doesn’t come off it’s all welded together

Thank you for this confirmation..

I will clean this up now and then see, if that can be resealed just. For now anyway, so I can keep it rolling without running the axle dry..

I have used temperature resistant sealant for now, and hope it stays dry now, at least for a while.

Is this the fill port there in the middle of the picture?

I assume it is like on the gearbox, fill it up until it drips out of the fill port?

Any recommendations regarding the oil I should use?

Thank you all very much, this forum is always a great help..

Ps: what is, or was, this fill port in terms of size? It looks like it might not like any attempts with wrong key sizes :-

I hope I get that plug out at all.. Will start cleaning it up now and see how bad it is.. .

Yes that’s the filler plug it’s a square I use a 1/2 or 3/8 ratchet give it a good clean out and some wd40 I use. EP 90 make sure you get the correct oil any motor factor will stock it .

There's plenty of "meat" on the plug for "many" options of removal.
Take a deep breath and be positive.

You're great. I love this positive attitude. . Maybe that's only because its someone else's plug :-)

No, I'm just having a laugh. I tried to get some wd40 to soak in over night now.. The local motorfactors did not have the right gear oil anyway, but can get it for tomorrow. and then we see how that goes..

By all means, it can't be worse then loosing an LAV(rear brake compensation valve) on the motorway, leaving just the open break lines behind.. and I have seen that happen :-)

I have to say I am struggling with this plug. 1/2" drive was too big, 3/8 too small. And it is hard to determine, what it originally was.

More wd40 and another attempt later on.. Its only getting busted, but what can you do :-)
