fuel stop solenoid removal on mk3 2.5di

Hi, first time on this forum, first post.
I have a 1991 mk3 transit 2.5di engine which stopped and will not start again. Tested power supply to stop solenoid and OK. No click . Need to renew solenoid, made spanner to fit and unscrewed as far as i could but not able to take out as it is impeded by a fitting on the pump next to the feed pipe.
What is this fitting? Can it be removed?
If not, how do I get the solenoid out?
