need help with alternator for 2.5 di

Postby gtec » Fri Jul 23, 2021 2:24 pm

hello all.
I am in the process of reinstalling the alternator on my transit food truck after a rebuild as I wasnt the one who took it off originally. my problem is that i cant identify the 3 terminals. if one is for a ground i havent found the ground wire and there may not be one. is this ok? My understanding from the mess and hacks in the engine bay is that someone clever tried to get the alternator to drive a small fridge in the truck which ultimatly fried the alternator in the process. :|

any help is greatly appreciated.

IIRC the 2 large spades connectors are live to the battery, the smaller one is the exciter wire to the ign, no earth wire, it earths through the body to the block.

Correct.

2 Large terminals should both connect direct to battery (there are 2 because one spade terminal isn't really rated for the load), and the other to the exciter (charge warning lamp...)
