Mk 5 spare wheel carrier

Postby CCCars » Mon Jul 26, 2021 7:59 pm

We recently bought a Transit based 1999 Autosleeper Duetto, after getting home we discovered it didn't have a jack or any wheel changing equipment, also front wheels had security nuts but no sign of the adaptor!
Anyway this is where I am now, after removing the rear bumper to lower the spare wheel to the ground I discovered that the spindle of the winch thing is damaged so I removed the spare wheel holder to take a closer look, the end of the spindle seems to need an 8 sided socket to operate it?
The jack handle I bought has a square knob on the end so that's no help.
I had to remove the rear bumper because the tow bar which was fitted had pushed the bumper up making access to the hole to wind down the spare wheel impossible, as I have no intention of towing anything I've removed the tow bar and made a step to help access via the rear doors.
I need details of the tool needed to wind the spare wheel up and down in case of a puncture please.

It should be the square section on the end of the jack handle! Maybe you could upload a picture of the spindle assembly?

The tool should look something like this...

it also fits in the jack.

The hole in the square isn't always there, I've had mk5s with and without it, the current mk5 defintely needs the hole.

All mk5 jack handles have the octagonal recess for the spare wheel hanger

But mk4 ones don't - they relied on the square drive. The mk4 version is far better in my opinion.

The square on the mk4 jack is also smaller, so you can't use a mk4 jack with a mk5 or vice versa

Here we go, first attempt on this forum!
Hopefully it will appear?
I've removed the locking lever to get a better look at the spindle, as per the reply my jack handle only has a square but no octagonal recess so looks like I have the wrong handle
I also seem to have the wrong jack as mine has an attatched handle instead of a square socket :(
Does anyone have the part numbers for the correct items?
Many Thanks
Graham

If it helps the square on my jack handle measures 18mm across the flats of the square.

I believe this is what you need - but ask the seller to confirm it has the recess

I managed to track down the part number and found a new one from Rates Ford so will need to carry my spare in the van for now :( the boss is not impressed but if I put it back under the van we'll be sure to get a flat and not be able to get it down without taking the bumper off so I can get my socket bar in and it will be sure to be pissing down as well!

So far I have the jack but no handle and an 8 sided 15mm socket so I can wind the spare down if required, will have to take a trip round the breakers and see if I can locate a handle, I fitted new security nuts to the wheels and injected puncture preventative into the tyres so hopefully I won't need any of this kit but who knows!
