Help!!!2.5 di wont start

Postby Mattyone » Mon Aug 09, 2021 3:40 pm

Hello everyone, had a cam belt sheer engine stopped and bent 2 valves. I am a keen DIY`er but prone to mistakes along the way so help would be so grateful. The engine is on a boat so trying to keep cost down as once the word "Marine" is used the £££`s go mad Replaced the 2 valves and tried to start engine but not having any of it unless I spray with easy start which makes it seem like its trying, without easy start nothing. There is a YouTube vid of what happens

Valves are never bent... (well you would have been extremely unlucky)

The push rods bent, and frequently the rockers snap too - is this what you mean?

After you replaced the components, did you set the valve clearances?

From memory I can’t think of any other 4 cylinder engine that the one from nine sequence doesn’t work.

Hi I recently did 2 belts on 2 different mk5 and got one of them 1 tooth out on the timing. Check the timing pins and I then set the timing so they start on the button and they both seem to be going better than before

Its because the DI hasn't got the traditional 1342 firing order... its 1243...

Cheers Matt the only time I have ever Thought of the firing order of an engine was with petrol engines putting the ignition leads back on in the right order .most diesels it’s difficult to get the pipes on the wrong way round as they are clamped together in sets or part sets.

Just got back to engine adjusted the valve clearance but engine still won't start, I am at a loss and very awkward for assistance because engine is in a boat and the word boat or marine makes £ signs have fits

If it's running ok on easy start in the vid then surely it's a fuel supply problem?
have you put any fuel pipes back on the wrong way round? Maybe on lift pump or fuel filter?

I did change the fuel filter but topped it up when put new one on, after what you said will go through the fuel system again checking and try to purge any air out, not able to get to boat for another week now, thanks for you advice, will update late

With that amount of time running on easystart it should have bled any air out of the sytem, so there is some problem getting fuel to the injectors, if you don't find anything obvious then try running some fuel direct to the injection pump inlet from a container of fuel.

I did loosen the nuts to all the injectors whilst trying to start and I was getting a good squirt out of each one which told me the fuel was getting through??
