Replace Mk5 wing mirror glass - how to?

Postby ColinJack » Wed Aug 11, 2021 2:29 pm

Some prat drifted across and took out my wing mirror yesterday. Mk5 smiley non-electric mirror.
I have managed to locate a NOS Ford replacement glass and back cover so now need to get this fitted before MOT time on Monday!
It looks like the old glass should just 'pop' off with some help but I can't get it to move.
I can't find a you-tube video to confirm I have it right so would appreciate a little guidance please.
Does it just pop off the ball or is there technique involved?

Thanks

I wouldn't say it "pops" off... its feckin tight... but yes it does pull off (with a fair amount of force) there are no other fixings.

Wear good gloves and goggles... and don't be suprised if the new glass cracks when installed... it may be a good idea (especially with the back cover off) to cover the surface with something (a reasonably thick piece of wood/plywood) and use a G clamp to squeeze the mirror back over the ball... a bit of lube will help get it back on too

Cheers Matt. That is what I suspected but it is well attached! ;)
So give it some wellie to get the old one off and then lube and gentle pressure to get the new one on. Fingers crossed.

Pretty much!

If you are fitting a new back, I would do that after the new glass goes on (should just push on too)

Thanks. Done the back before (wife driving  ).
I like your idea of using a G-clamp for the glass.

Prise it off with a long screw driver or tyre lever, put a dab of grease in the cup and put a rolled up rag in the centre of the glass and push it on

Cheers Matt for the advice. New glass in and unbroken! :D
G clamp was a cracking idea.

Asking for a cracked glass doing it that way , I find a small book ( Bible) is perfect , just put it central and spread the pressure when popping the new glass on ..
