Mk3 king pin play

Postby Islander71 » Wed Sep 15, 2021 3:42 pm

Advisory on last mot was vertical play on king pins. I've heard its possible to add a shim to the top of the axle without removing the king pin. Does anyone have a drawing or dimensions for this - I'm guessing it will need tabs bent down to stop it coming out. From what I can make out the king pin seems to be 34mm dia - is this right? Haynes gives clearance as .025 - 1.0mm with shims available 3.3 - 4.6mm. The vertical play on mine is about 3mm, so could do with something...

I don’t know if someone makes shims that can be fitted without removing the kingpins but every kingpin I’ve done and that’s a lot the proper way is to remove the kingpin .The lift on kingpins will be in the testers manual if it doesn’t go over the limit they cannot fail it .before removing the kingpins to shim them up I’d wait till they do fail if it’s not greater lift than 1 mil that is the upper limit . And always grease the kingpins before the test it will not help on lift but it will on rock .

normally the bearing collapses, as dumper said plenty of grease will help

Theres no lateral play in the bushes, so they are not worn - just the vertical play. The bottom section takes the vertical thrust, so shimming the top is only taking that play up -there is no thrust on it - unless the wheel is hanging in the air! I remember taking out king pins on a LDV 250 minibus, it took 12 hours with a 14lb sledge hammer, so I'd rather not have to remove the king pins just for taking up some slack. I'm sure I read on the forum that someone had a diagram of the C shape shim with tabs, but cannt now find it.

As I said get some feeler gauges and check the play if it’s within limits then leave it but if you can find the shims your looking for it will do no harm putting them in for test for hgvs the limit is 1 mil have a word with a mot tester and get them to look up the right limit for a van I think it’s the same .
You are right you are more likely to fail on lift then on side play we did a experiment on a HGV and assembled the stub axle without the bushes but shimmed it up and it would still pass the test .
