Mk3 Idle Vibration

Postby colly 695 » Sat Oct 23, 2021 8:39 am

I have a 1990 mk3 190 lwb tipper, it was originally a 2.0 pinto but now 2.5D which came from my mk5 - the issue i'm having is that at idle the front wheels are visually vibrating along with steering wheel, gearstick ect.
Am I correct in thinking the mk3 diesel had a slightly higher idle speed than the mk5?

Cheers

It shouldn't really vibrate the wheels and steering, is there an engine mount loose or broken?

Does it change if you alter the tickover speed?

The vibration does stop if the revs are increased a bit - the engine mounts are tight as far as I know, had a mechanic recently put brand new rubbers in them.
Only reason I thought the idle speed may be the cause is the engine came out of a mk5 which was mounted completely different to the mk3 (underneath the chassis compared to the old mk3 mounting brackets on the top of the chassis.

IIRC the idle speed is 850rpm plus or minus 50 rpm, maybe just up the idle a little as long as it isn't too fast.

When installing the engine with MK5, it was necessary to leave the old cast iron feet, instead of the aluminum MK5.
Make the idle speed more, maybe then vibration will disappear.

Thanks folks

I'm hopefully getting my mechanic to adjust the idle speed - doesn't need to go up much but it stops the horrendous vibration.
I have turned the fuel screw 1.5 turns clockwise and thought it may have something to do with that but doubt it, also the egr has been disabled along with the butterfly in the inlet.

Once the simple, potential causes have been checked and ruled out (idle speed, engine mounts, air intake leaks, air in fuel), the next step would be to investigate the diesel injectors. Check opening pressure, shape of diesel spray and leaks. Cleaned and adjusted injectors can sometimes do wonders.

hello,
let me refresh the topic slightly - my lucas CAV was leaking, so this pump guy fixed the leak, but i thing he messed a bit with the idle while setting it up, and from now on it shakes and vibrates on idle pretty badly, and also when driving slowly you can "hear" that engine is receiving too much fuel.
does anyone have a instructions or could point me out to the direction of setting up the pump again - maybe by myself? or is it too risky? i'd love to at least regulate that idle, so waiting on the red light will not shake the hell ot of my nugget. thx in advance!
