Fuel Injection Leak - Need a Local Diesel Specialist

Postby electric_nan » Mon Nov 15, 2021 5:16 pm

Hi all, not too knowledgable on cars so forgive me...

I have a 1989 Ford Transit 2.5di motorhome that for a few months now has had an intermittent issue where on starting the engine the revs will drop and cut out. I can get around the problem by just reving the engine a little or - if it doesn't cut out straight away - letting it idle for a minute or two before pulling away (if I pull away too early sometimes it will cut out on dipping the clutch), once I've done this it won't cut out during the journey.

I took it for a diagnostic at Kwik-fit today and, although it didn't cut out during the short time they had it, they did notice a small fuel leak at a couple of the fuel injectors and are pretty sure it is the issue from the description I gave them. They were unable to find any suppliers for an engine this old so me told to find a diesel specialist in the area.

Can anyone recommend a garage in my area (Southend, Essex) that might be able to help? Also, any ideas on the cost of such a job? I want to sell the van so torn between getting it sorted now or just highlighting the issue to whoever I sell it to.

Thanks,

Are you able to take a photo of the injectors and show us where the leak is?

TBH they never showed me, at the time of picking it up the mechanic wasn't there...I'll go and have a look to see if it's easily visible

Just went to run the engine and couldn't see any visible leaks - bear in mind I don't know what I'm looking at - however did see a small clear puddle of liquid on the engine that was diesel, so I assume this is a source of the leak. Have attached images that hopefully make more sense to you guys

Looks like you've got the old Lucas pump with 2 bolt injectors?

Any local garage suggestions? I prefer to go word of mouth rather than whoever appears first on google, especially after having trouble with the last garage I used

I haven't used them but I got them on a list of injection specialist dealers from Stanadyne and they seemed to know their stuff when chatting on the phone.

An update.

The van has been with the above garage for a couple of weeks now and they seem pretty confident that the fuel pump needs an overhaul. Based of a recent similar case of theirs (but with a Bosch pump, not Lucas) the parts + labour came to £1400, so they are estimating roughly the same price with mine, possibly £1600. This include a new cam belt as well. Seems like a lot of money for a single part replacement, but I understand these parts are hard to come across these days.

I'm pretty tempted to try flog the van now for cheap with the issue made clear, but not sure who would be in the market for a an old motorhome with starting issues. I just want to get rid of the bloody thing!
