Fitting a towbar to a mk5 smiley

Postby npjrogers » Thu Dec 30, 2021 7:28 pm

Hope everyone had a good Christmas and are looking fwd to a great New Year. We would like to fit a towbar to our Mk 5 swb 95 smiley. The van has the spare tyre hoisted up on a windup wire cable. Is it possible to fit a towbar and still keep the spare tyre in its original place? Can anyone tell me how to tell if a particular is compatible with the spare wheel. Measurement etc.. Many thanks for any help or advice you can offer.

You should be alright on transits the tow bar is bolted off the chassis the last one I fitted used the bolt holes that held on the the rear bumper with spacers in the chassis to take the strain that was on a mk 3 witch is basically the same as a mk 5 .I have only seen one transit that the wheel could not be fitted in the normal place as it had been modified with extra central mounting bars it was used for towing something it shouldn’t.

I've got a few Smiley's and am yet to find one I wasnt able to fit a towbar onto. My towbars have bolted directly on the two parallel chassis members that run from front to back of the vehicle. Should fit in behind the spare tyre and use 6 bolts (three per side).

Will get underneath shortly and shoot a photo to help you out.
